Hello dear readers,
Today let's talk about Saturn.
Saturn represents Systems, Blueprints, Formats and Orders. It is the rule book of the Universe. It represents that what is fair and balanced. In fact Many a times Venus can be seen as a 'sub-set' of Saturn, a pleasant version of it.
In one line Saturn represents Systems.
What is a System? Well, A Corporate company is a System, so is the human body and so is the solar system. The way things work in a hierarchy in your office also represents a system and so does the way seasons change regularly over time.
We read about systems in the 2nd law, or the
Law of Systems. We read that everything is a system in this universe and is made up sub systems that contribute to the proper functioning of a larger system.
Saturn is the planet that represents the manifestation of the 2nd law. The 2nd law comes under Saturn's domain. But if you have read both the 1st 2 laws you must also be aware that no system can exist independent of a Sequence. Every entity or event, in this universe is both a Sequence & a System. Systems are 'entangled' with sequences, so much so that they are usually inseparable and exist as a combination or a single entity to create a 'Sequence-System' or a 'Space-time' Universe (which acts like a host) for other entities to 'come-in' and perform their dance (role).
If the previous paragraph did not make any good sense to you, then i suppose you much 1st go through the '
Law of Sequences' and the 'Law of Systems' or the 1st 2 laws of Astrology in this blog. Only after you are thorough with the 7 cosmic laws, can you truly begin to 'See' the underlying nature of all Planets as well as their dance at play in the entire 'Cosmos'.
So continuing, Since Systems and Sequences are ever entangled into 1 common entity, All Systems must also be Sequences in parallel and Vice versa is also true. At least as far as our universe is considered.
And that is why Saturn, although a planet ruling over 'Systems', also represents the greatest 'Sequence' of this universe and that is TIME.
So much so that Saturn is named as Kronos in ancient Greek mythology. In ancient greek era Cronos was the word used for Time. Words like Chronology, Chronological order, and many other derivations come from the same root Kronos.
So in brief Saturn represents Systems & Time. Actually anything that would represent Systems, will also represent a sequence of some kind as well, and vice versa is also true, as we will see in the article on Jupiter. In addition these qualities also are linked to other Laws of Symmetry and Asymmetry as well, as we read in subsequent chapters on Planets.
Although it is to be noted that we humans have in practice, turned TIME (which inherently is a long sequence) into segments like hours, minutes, seconds, days, decades, and centuries to turn this into a 'System-ic' thing. Hence the structured nature of Time can be seen as a System as well.
In Vedic Mythology, Saturn or 'Shani dev' rule the domain of Natural Justice, Law, KARMA and Time.
In Greek and Roman histories, Saturn (Kronos) was born to Uranus and God Mother Gaea. Saturn married his sister Rhea to give birth to the next generation of Titans including Zeus (Jupiter). Zeus overthrew his father Kronos to become the ruler of Olympus. Interestingly, Kronos had done the same with his father to become the ruler of Olympus.
In Vedic Mythology Saturn was born to SUN & 'Chhaya'. Hence it developed a darker complexion and did not like the Glow and Ego shown by his father Sun. While the Sun represent Authority and Power, Saturn represented the common masses and the rule of law.
In Both cultures Saturn represents similar concepts and in both of them there is a friction shown with 'father' or Authority.
Sign Ownership:
Saturn is said to be the ruler of the Sign of Capricorn and Aquarius. If you note here this is the only planet who's sign ownership is with 2 signs placed adjacent to each other. 10 & 11 or Capricorn and Aquarius . This is an interesting fact that we will dwell deeper into in subsequent chapters. The sign of Capricorn relates to structure and organisation and that of Aquarius represents Interaction of different systems or structures (Systems) in a coordinated way (See Image with gears). Aquarius also relates to the fruits of one's hard work and believes in Secularism and Universalism. Hence All these qualities are found in Saturn as well.
Quantisation of the Universe (Some content for Physics Nerds):
Another Interesting correlation to Modern Physics would be the concept of Quantisation. Quantisation says, at sub atomic levels most of the universe is 'Quantised' or made up of small units or multiples of a fixed smallest unit. You can read more about it
here. Note that the Quantum field theory says that there are source 'fields' and particles emerge as 'disturbances' or waves in these different fields. But 'inside the universe' all these particles or waves have to act in a 'Quantised' manner. The universe is quantised. As if made of bricks, packets of space, time and energy. Although no confirmation on Quantisation of TIME has been found but Space is believed strongly to be quantise with the minimum length possible in this Universe to be called the Plank Length and the Minimum Volume possible to be "
Plank Volume'. All Space in the entire universe can only exist in multiple of 'Plank Volume' and not in any fraction or decimal of it. It can either be 1 plan volume or 2 or a 100 and never 1.5 or 50.2 plank volumes. It's always in multiples of the smallest unit and this property is called Quantisation.
Saturn relates predominantly to the 'time' part of the 'Space-time' universe and is blended with Jupiter in doing so. But the role of Saturn is in a ‘quantifying and structuring’ manner or in a ‘limit' inducing manner. It gives limits and sizes to 'things' and entities.
As i explained in previous articles on the cosmic laws, both Jupiter and Saturn represent Space & time together in an inseparable way, with one acting as the Space on some occasions and time on others. Although predominantly on a macroscopic scale, Jupiter represents the expanding Space & Saturn represents the arrow of Time.
Some interesting Astronomy:
Saturn is the farthest planet visible to the naked eye at night. it is also one the slowest of the inner main planets in Vedic astrological texts. It takes around 29.5 years to complete one circle of the zodiac belt and spends approximately 2.5 years in one sign. A 60 year cycle of Jupiter and Saturn alignment is used to represent 2 phases of a human beings life and hence a total of 120 years of 'Maha-dasha' cycles in Vedic Parashari astrology. It being the slowest moving of all is also related to slow but steadily moving gigantic and large things in Astrology. Saturn represents things that move slowly but steadily for the long run. It is a representation of Old aged people as well.
Astrology and Predictions:
Saturn relates to the law, format, systems, time, structures, quantifications, physical forms, rules, principles, structure, organisations and hierarchy. It relates to discipline, order, organised behaviour and patterns. It also relates to discipline & dutifulness. Serving those in need. Serving the common masses is the domain of Saturn. Karma & Justice are under the domain of Saturn.
Saturn represents the rules of a game or System. It dictates how a Machine operates. The laws of Physics are Saturn.
Because of it's correlation to Jupiter (as per the cosmic laws) Saturn-ic system scales & replicates very fast. Hence disciplined, well organised & structured systems grow and scale easily. Every McDonald's is the same globally, but every Street vendor is not, and that is why street business cannot easily scale unless turned into something standardised. Because of these reasons, Saturn also relates to things like magnanimity, universalism, monotonousness, repetition and large universal systems.
Social traditions and customs as well as all orthodox rules relate to Saturn or Ketu (South Node).
In addition any large area networks, corporates, corporate multinational companies, franchisee, business models, big reputed brands or any successful small business model would relate to the energy of Saturn and does not form or survive without a good influence of Saturn.
In fact, Brand image is something that Jupiter & Sun grant but building that brand needs the influence of a strong Saturn working at it's core.
Sun & Jupiter make the laws. Saturn makes sure the law is followed and not broken.
Building a new law requires wise people to sit and discuss all possibilities, all pros and cons as well as implications of the new law. Hence the wisdom of Jupiter is needed to draft a new bill. Sun is needed to have the authority to implement that law. But once, a bill is passed and becomes the law, it is now represented by Saturn. Punishing or executing those who do not follow the law is represented by Mars (the Police or the Army). Hence all these energies merge in creating a Judicial system.
And since Saturn is so related to following the laws and systems, this is commonly related to Jobs and Labour also. One's career prospects and direction as well as possibility of a new job can be seen through Saturn.
Saturn instils discipline and accountability in People. It instils a sense of responsibility and dutifulness. It makes people abide by the laws and rules of the workplace. Makes a very sincere employee. It wants slow and steady movement which can be seen as causing delays by some souls, but is actually showing honest and reasonable growth after genuine learning and hard work. It teaches a lot of things through experience and hence is related to Old experienced Veterans of any industry.
An example of a City (Chandigarh):
Since Saturn likes orchestration and structure a lot, it is considered good and strong in places or times where these ideals are followed. Consider a city like Chandigarh (If you haven't seen, Google it up). Everyone has to follow the traffic rules very well, every sector is structured and almost a replica of others. This is Saturn. And As you see, the city has shown much faster growth than the entire state (Jupiter). The best sectors of Chandigarh are sector 8, 17, 26 and 35 all of which add up to a total of 8. Numerology states that number 8 represents Saturn. As systems are very well followed in Chandigarh, The number 8 becomes blessed with massive growth (Jupiter). A well placed Saturn automatically attracts the energy of Jupiter & blessed people, places and events with all the good things.
If you build good systems, if you follow the rules & regulations, if you work with sincerity, discipline and stay in order, growth is bound to come.
Consider the opposite, a city like Noida, where you can anytime break traffic lights, you can cross over a road divider, you can give bribes, Do you think people will be happy & blessed (Jupiter) or there will be growth? Answer is no. There may be short term spikes out of other energies but not a satisfactory, stable story of prosperity and contentment.
Similar to a city, a company or organisation where everyone follows there duty. Where order & hierarchy is maintained and followed with respect. Where all KRAs and KPIs are well determined and where everyone does their part of the job well, is bound to grow.
Same concept applies to societies, states and countries. Chaos & instability show no direction or growth. Growth is seen in places with discipline, stability, reliability & Confidence.
The Chess Analogy (An interesting idea):
Consider a game of chess. It has some rules to it and it has a structure to it. There are rules how a pawn or bishop can move. How can a horse or queen move. These rules of the game are what Saturn represents. But you have a choice to select which pawn to move and where to take it. If you pick up a horse, it can only move in a specific way. There are only 8 possible positions it can go (this is Saturn), but you have the free will to decide which of the 8 positions you want to place it (this is Jupiter--free will). you have the free will to take your paws anywhere, (free will) but within the rules & limits of the game (Saturn). You cannot just place your horse anywhere you want at any time, that would break the game and defeat the whole purpose of playing. That would be chaos and confusion.
But as we know we can cheat ;) and sneak a pawn here and there without anyone knowing. There can be 'outside' influences on the game. The game may be influenced by betting or outside forces in other ways.
These represent the nodes (Rahu / Ketu), Uranus and Neptune etc. every game has some 'outside' influences on it that affect it without taking part in it.
The purpose of the game is to win i.e the sun of this chess game.
The pawns which actually execute the movement as per the law or rules are represented by Mars. Mars is exalted when it follows the rules perfectly and that is why exalted in Capricorn or the 10th sign.
Their movements and interaction are represented by Mercury and Venus.
The base on which this structure rests is the Moon.
This is not a 100% representation of reality, but gives some good ideas.
In a Nutshell, the universe works much like a game of chess. it has it's entities, rules and possibilities.
These possibilities are labelled as free will. There are infinite possibilities and hopes and ways for every
entity but still there are rules, regulations and laws each entity has to abide by which limits it’s movement.
That limit is Saturn.
The game has a beginning or initiation. It also has a purpose and will which again as i said is
represented by the SUN. The game needs a support base or a board (the moon) , each entity ,
say a knight (horse) or bishop has it's will and desire as per it’s DNA / Position (which represents
the sub-suns in this system. it has many possibilities & directions it can go in and evolve or change
the game altogether (Jupiter) which we feel like is a free will, but if you closely observe there are only
6-8 possible locations it can go, lawfully which is it’s limit as held by the laws & rules of the game (Saturn).
It’s relationships with other entities are Venus, It’s movement and interaction with them all on the board
is Mercury. It’s action to assert the will of the game (the sun) and to assert action as per the laws of the
game is related to Mars and finally, Yes there are the cheating and out of the game hacks that are
represented by the Nodes and outer planets in this system. They represent actions taken by breaking
all rules, by being outside the system and by following one's deep instincts only. The houses from
1 through 12 represent the phases of the game from initiation to culmination, so a new cycle can begin
every time.
Ultimate truth is Pluto / Shiva, representing the “death/culmination” of the system or game of chess.
No one can escape that fact that the game must and will end. so a new cycle or a new game of chess
can begin in a new way again.
So i hope this was a useful chapter for you. I tried my best to reveal the nature of Saturn both from Humane and Mundane perspectives. This knowledge should help you do a better analysis of birth charts in future.
Next time we will come here with a new article on either Jupiter or some other interesting topic.
Until then,
Yours truly,
