Who are the 'Snake' Gods in ancient cultures?

Hello dear readers,

Lately i have been wondering a lot about the concept of 'Naagas' in Vedic literature. When we talked about the 5th cosmic law on this blog, we discussed how, we all are physical manifestations of the same cosmic field / energy. We discussed how a field, gives birth to a particle. These particles interact with each other to form more entities like atoms, molecules, chemistry and life as we know it. We also saw how a higher dimensional common field can give birth to sub fields each having its own particles with different 'behaviours'. And we discussed how 'Space-time' is the 'host field' into which other fields 'enter' and create particles & all their interactions that manifests as our visible and observable universe.

Now all these observations and thoughts are very much similar to the predictions and ideas of the 'Quantum field theory' in Modern science.

A field, that gives birth to an entity which then further leads to the other events. The Articles on Uranus & Neptune clarify this concept very well.

We saw these manifestation of this concept in many Vedic stories.

Neptune was related to this. (Please read on Neptune before this)

The concept of 'Brahman' in Vedic literatures.

Lord Vishnu presiding over the eternal ('anant' or Infinite) cosmic ocean represents this.

Indra (Zeus) as son of Aditi (boundless) represents this field theory

Many religions as mentioned in my previous posts mention this concept as well.

But in all these repeated representations of the infinite fields, i also see 1 more pattern repeating, which is am unable to make a proper sense of, and that is the emergence of 'Naagas' in all these stories.

Who or what are these entities?

In 'Vaikunt' , Lord Vishnu rests on the 'Shesha Naag' the oldest brother of all 'Naagas' as per vedic literature.

When Lord Krishna was born in his Human form and was being taken from his prison cell to Mathura, we see again, A child, in a basked, Surrounded by waters and being protected (connected/covered) by Shesha Naag.

Lord Krishna crossing the waters of Yamuna.

We see Rahu & Ketu as a serpent representation in many cultures and theories.

We see 'Vasuki' a snake always coiled around the neck of Lord Shiva.

Ancient literature says that Kashyap Rishi had 3 wives (some literatures mention 13). Aditi, Diti and Kadru. Aditi gave birth to the Devas, Diti was the mother of Asuras or Daityas, and to Mata Kadru were born the Snakes, including 'Shesha Naag' & 'Vasuki'.

But if Naagas came into being after lord Brahma created Kashyapa, then why do we see Lord Vishnu on Shesha Naag in many pictures, where Lord Brahma is coming into existence after Lord Vishnu.

These are some things i am still unable to grasp & understand. What is the significance of these snake like entities in the cosmic & higher dimensional scenarios.

In many Chinese cultures we see these snakes or dragons come up repeatedly. Infact, Chienese Astrology mainly works around these only.

Intrestingly the Nakshatra of 'Ashlesha' in Vedic Astrology is also linked to this 'Serpentine' energy with its charm, spiritual connections & many other 'serpentine' features.

Are these a representation os the pathways between different dimensions? Are they a representation of some kind of a connecting link? Or something else?

A Wormhole of some kind?

I am still unable to grasp this concept fully, but what i do understand is that these are intense and unfathomable energies & entities, .. not easy to understand....

Some texts correlate this to the Spinal cord, the backbone and the 'Kundalini' Shakti as well.  I am not very well versed with this knowledge & concept of Kundalini Shakti, but i would love to know more.

This is a deep concept not easy to make sense of even today.

What do you think?

What do these 'Naagas' represent?

Let us see what comes up next time,

Until then,

  1. A high thinking level topic to discuss. According to my little knowledge, Naga's are first ever creatures on earth.
